Hypnotherapy and Panic attacks

Research has shown that hypnotherapy can help relieve anxiety. It can also be used to help in coping with panic disorders. While under hypnosis, a person with panic disorder may be guided to bring attention to coping with specific symptoms and overcoming limiting behaviors. They literally are taught how to relax. Usually at the first session people will be amazed at how relaxed they feel. Once the hypnotist has helped the client become relaxed, he/she may ask the person to focus on why they have panic attacks and walk them through so the panic passes quickly when they stop their anxious thoughts. The person will bring awareness to the physical sensations, emotions, and cognitions associated with their attacks, such as feeling like you are having a heart attack, anxiety and fear. The hypnotist will use calming words of encouragement, like “You feel safe despite your discomfort” or “You are in control of your anxiety.” The hypnotist may also suggest ways to cope with these feelings, such as taking three deep breaths when you feel this way. Hypnotherapy can also be used in the treatment of agoraphobia, a common condition for people with panic disorder. Many people get to the point where they don’t want to leave their home, or they have difficulty driving. Hypnotherapy can help a person with panic disorder become more confident and feel good about themselves.
